Next is the "boss levels" which the game is also, given the above, naturally a bit anemic on. Make them each challenge the player on a different mechanic like Galaxy's did, make them a spectacle. More of them, and make them the best yet for the next game please. This really should've been 2D Mario's jump in quality for bosses, but instead it's a downgrade. I really think there's room for improvement here and it really sticks out as the biggest flaw of the game. I've said over and over how the game needed more bosses and boss variety. The first main thing is Bowser, bosses and castle levels. They're more than just "novelty", most of them are natural extensions of the game's overall design mentality and stands as a pretty notable evolution of Mario's 2D platformer design. To me this is an element that shares a lot of its DNA with 3D Mario, though perhaps especially Odyssey. This game has a really crazy number of additions to Mario's bestiary and so many of them are made to be more than just obstacles, they're integrated in ways that affect the level itself in a variety of dynamic and inventive ways, whether you're bouncing off of them, platforming off of surfaces they've formed, lure/direct them to certain locations, and the like.

I think part of what carries this game far above the recent 2D Marios for me which now ring downright forgettable in comparison to how good this game is, is something that was highlighted in a stream I recently watched it's that Nintendo went the full mile in designing a lot of these levels around enemies that have an actual influence on the overall platforming design.
